The selection rule we give warehouse buyers: measure the girth of the object along one axis (over the top and under the bottom, back to the start), divide by two, and choose a band whose resting length is 25-50% of that half-girth. At that ratio the band works in the middle of its stretch range - enough tension to grip firmly, enough reserve to avoid aging at maximum extension. When in doubt between two sizes, take the larger: an over-stretched band wears out far faster than a lightly-stretched one.

Crossing two standard bands looks equivalent but behaves differently in practice. Two crossed bands apply their force independently - each one can slip toward an edge, and the crossing point rubs, which is where snapping starts.
